Thermal Imaging Surveys – What Are They And Why Are They Important?

Thermal Imaging Surveys, also called IR surveys or Infrared Surveys, is a means of using infrared imaging to scan the infrared portion of the light spectrum. This type of scan allows for a marine electrician to identify any potential problems that may exist that may not be detectable using standard tools by identifying temperature anomalies.

How Does A Thermal Imaging Survey Help My Yacht’s Performance?
Thermal Imaging survey’s are excellent for identifying issues that may not be visible to the naked eye such as a coolant blockage which could cause major damage to an engine. This type of survey is called “non-destructive” because equipment and parts do not need to be disassembled to conduct the survey. This gives the benefit of being able to quickly identify what could quickly become a major problem without spending too much time diagnosing any one issue or causing any potential damage to equipment during the survey.

How Exactly Does Thermal Imaging Work?
Everything gives off some form thermal energy or heat, and depending on the heat of any given object it will register as a different color range within the thermal imaging camera. In addition, thermal imaging cameras don’t actually require any light at all so can provide extremely reliable heat signature readings without concern of external interference. As marine electricians survey different machinery and equipment, they are able to identify any temperature anomalies within equipment as these are typically indicative of a larger issue.

How Thermal Imaging Improves Vessel Safety
There are literally hundreds of potential scenarios from electrical fires to an overheated engine that could be avoided with proper preventative maintenance on your yacht or ship like a thermal imaging survey.
